Persistence...or grit...or toughness. Whatever word you like, it is a crucial leadership skill.

Angela Duckworth’s research in recent years has highlighted the importance of “grit”—defined as a “personality trait combining perseverance and passion”. In her book of the same name, she outlines why that trait may be more important than any raw or refined talents in achieving personal success.
Echoes of Duckworth’s work are found in the 2024 Competencies for the College Presidency, which lists “demonstrating resilience” as the second of the seven competencies successful higher education leaders apply.
College presidents—and other executives inside and outside the academy—inevitably face scrutiny, criticism, and failure. Successful leaders draw on a few resources to deal with these challenges. They draw from within, demonstrating confidence in their ability to overcome obstacles. They derive strength—perhaps analogous to Duckworth’s use of the word “passion”--from a deep commitment to institutional mission and purpose, most powerfully when that mission and purpose align with their own sense of individual values. And, importantly, they draw from others—friends, families, networks, teams, colleagues, etc.
Among the many rewarding things about being an executive coach is the ability to serve as one of those “others”…someone who helps leaders access the deep well that lies within themselves, affirm their foundation of institutional and individual values, and identify others who can support them in their leadership journey.
If you are in a leadership role and could use that kind of support, you are in good company. I’m reminded of Jay Bilas’ book, Toughness, in which he quotes legendary Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski as saying, “You are not tough alone.”
Feel free to reach out if you’d like to discuss your perspective on persistence (or grit, or toughness)…I’d love to hear more about your experiences, and to offer whatever support I can in your leadership journey. None of us is tough/resilient alone!
